Chapel Hill Historic District

Chapel Hill Historic District – There are three main historic districts in Chapel Hill, the Franklin/Rosemary Historic District, the Cameron/McCauley Historic District and the Gimghoul Historic District. The historic areas around Chapel Hill date back to around the 1920?s and are within easy walking distance to UNC Chapel Hill. Many of the homes in these areas have been beautifully renovated in the past decade. In addition to the history and charm seen in each of the historic districts, Gimghoul also has a bit of mystery. Gimghoul castle sits at the end of Gimghoul road and is an object of interest for students and residents alike. Legend has it that Peter Dromgoole, a student at UNC, fell madly in love with a local girl known as Miss Fanny. However, she had also caught the eye of one of his fellow classmates, and they challenged each other to a duel at the very rock where Peter and Fanny would meet. The duel did not end favorably for Peter and it is said that the rock is still stained with his blood and that Fanny visited the site every day until she passed away from loneliness. Because of their location and rich history, home prices in these areas range from around $600,000 to over $2,000,000.
