I am James Litton Howard, Jamie for short. I am a native of Danville, Virginia, and have lived in Durham since 1992.

My journey into real estate began many years ago when I was a little boy. My family moved around quite a bit (in the same city, not anything exciting like moving around the country or the world...). I guess my love of homes started then, when I realized each house had it's own personality. Each house is unique, just like every person is a one-of-a-kind.

I began building miniature dollhouses when I was around ten years old. People should have known I had an interest in real estate when I started making miniature real estate signs and placing them in front of the houses! My mother surprised me when I was around 11 years old by getting a full-size real estate sign from a friend of hers who was a real estate broker and owned her own company. That was one of the greatest Christmas gifts I ever received.

At age 17, in the summer before my senior year of high school, I had an internship with a real estate broker in Danville. The plan was for me to start working for her once I graduated, but fate had different plans: my mother was offered and accepted a position at Duke University Medical Center, so we moved. I finished high school in unfamiliar territory and decided a career in real estate would have to wait.

For the heck of it, I enrolled in the College Transfer Program at Durham Technical Community College, having absolutely no idea what I was going to do with my life. During the course of the program, I had an English instructor who believed I had talent at writing. I'd never thought one way or the other about it... I decided, for the heck of it (again), to apply to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and pursue a degree in English. I graduated from UNC in May 1998.

Okay, back to real estate! After six years of living in the Triangle and feeling comfortable with the area, I enrolled in real estate school. I passed the school test, the state test, and I received my Salesman’s license. To make a little money, I took a part-time job grading essays at an educational assessment company in downtown Durham. The part-time job turned into a full-time position with benefits, and before I knew it, 18 years went by. During those years, I was an Administrative Assistant, Technical Writer, Data Manager, Project Manager, and Proposal Developer. As a result of cutbacks, my position was eliminated in January 2017.

For seven months I sent out resumes. LOTS of resumes! I heard back from very few and had even fewer interviews. I reached the point where I decided I had earned the right to pursue my original dream of a career in real estate. Once again, I enrolled in real estate school and, once again, I passed the school test and state test. I received my Broker’s license in October 2017.
